Introduction
The Northwest Indiana Sustainable
Regional Development Website was developed by students who are enrolled
in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana Universtiy
Northwest (IUN). IUN is one of the eight campuses of Indiana University.
The group of students are comprised of graduate and undergraduate levels
from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Every academic discipline
is represented by this group of students. Besides working on their
own environmental projects, students also work with other local environmental
organizations to make a difference in our area. We want to be united
as one voice, working together on various environmental issues.
Focus
Our focus is to examine environmental
planning issues as they pertain to Northwest Indiana. Sustainability becomes
an important component when we assess our natural resources which help
us to exist. In 1987, sustainable development was defined by the
Brundtland Commission as "meeting the needs of the present without compromising
the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." In order
to have any natural resources, both renewable and nonrenewable, for future
generations - it is our responsibility in the present to help conserve
these resources that are vital for our children and grandchildren.
Vision
Today, man versus nature is
no longer an either/or issue. Mankind and nature must move forward
as one harmonic being. The students of Northwest Indiana Sustainable
Regional Website are working on a vision - when social and economic
growth and the management and protection of natural resources become one
and the same.
