Welcome to F200

Examining Self as Teacher.
Master teachers understand that not only are they responsible for their students’ learning, they are also responsible for their own learning. This page has general information about F200. As a future teacher, it is your responsibility to become familiar with course requirements and assignments.

Prerequisite.  You must have passed English W131 with a C or better to enroll in F200. People who are lacking this prerequisite are excluded from the class.

Course Description.  This course is designed to help a student make a career decision, better conceptualize the kind of teacher the student wishes to become, and reconcile any preliminary concerns that may be hampering a personal examination of self as teacher. Students will design a major portion of their work.

Purpose.  The purpose of F200 is to acquaint you with the personal demands of teaching as a profession, the rewards and challenges of teaching, and the requirements of professional behavior. It will also enable you to examine the profession of teaching as a career choice, and provide you with the opportunity to create artifacts for two of the IUN Conceptual Framework program outcomes. A service-learning component requires you to work in a school or community-based service agency for a minimum of 20 hours. This project provides the opportunity for you to develop skills and dispositions that can be used in any profession. The course is also designed to introduce you to the following:

    1. The context in which teaching and learning take place including the nature of students and schools, socioeconomic status (SES), disabilities; etc.
    2. Teacher behaviors that promote learning and a sense of personal responsibility.
    3. Professional organizations and agencies, and their impact on teaching and learning.
    4. Historical, social, political, and economic forces that affect teaching; as well as current issues and trends in the profession such as charter schools, inclusion, etc.
    5. Teacher Education Program admission and advising procedures, including the portfolio assessment system.

A Final Note
. We are here to help you decide whether or not teaching is right for you. However, we cannot do that by ourselves. You must become an active participant in your own learning. Let us know if you are not getting as much out of this course as you think you should. Our doors are always open should you wish to talk about F200 or teacher education.
