National & State Social Studies Standards

So Many Standards from Which to Choose. The idea of “Standards” sounds simple, but the term may mean something different to each person who uses it. When parents speak of “Standards,” they typically mean Indiana Content Standards at their child’s grade level. Building principals often use the term to refer to IPSB Standards for Teachers. The district social studies coordinator will be referring to the National Social Studies Education Standards. The best way to avoid confusion is to ask the person to whom you are speaking to clarify which of the many “Standards” they mean.

National Social Studies Education Standards. You may read the National Social Studies Education Standards on-line at www.ncse.org. To save yourself time and inconvenience in the future, print out the Introduction & Thematic Strands in PDF format ASAP.

Indiana Social Studies Content Standards. To access the Indiana Content Standards, click on Content Standards, then choose Social Studies Standards and the appropriate grade level. To view or to print out all of the Standards at one time, select “Teacher’s Edition” instead of a grade level.

DPS Standards for Teachers. The Indiana Division of Professional Standards (DPS) Standards for Teachers listed below are also emphasized in this course. For a complete version of the Standards, click on Standards for Teachers
