Goal & Objectives
Goal.
The goal of E325 is to help you learn to teach inquiry-based, developmentally
appropriate, K-6 social studies in a manner consistent with the National
Council for Social Studies, the Indiana Department of Professional Standards,
and the School of Education’s Reflective Professional Model.
Objectives. Upon successful
completion of E325, students will . . .

Demonstrate
an understanding of the philosophical foundations of the social studies;
and the interrelationship between social studies, the social science
disciplines, and the other disciplines which make-up the elementary
social studies curriculum.

Demonstrate
knowledge of the nature, definition, and rationale for social studies
education in a multicultural democratic society that is globally interconnected
with other societies worldwide.

Demonstrate
knowledge of basic concepts in history, civics, economics, and geography
appropriate for teaching elementary social studies.

Show enthusiasm for social studies and for continued professional
development related to social studies education.

Exhibit
the ability to plan and create a democratic classroom that promotes
effective citizenry.

Exhibit
the ability to make use of materials, media, and technology to plan
an interdisciplinary unit which is appropriate for all students, including
those with disabilities, exceptionalities, and diverse cultural and
linguistic backgrounds.

Exhibit
the ability to apply a variety of instructional strategies to teach
and evaluate social studies lessons that engage students in reflective
inquiry, hands-on learning in order to develop their understanding
of important social studies concepts.

Exhibit
the ability to develop and use a variety of formative, summative,
and self-reflective assessment techniques in the planning and implementing
of elementary social studies instruction.

Utilize
technologies such as e-mail, PowerPoint, PDF, etc. to communicate
with the instructor and other members of the class, to access professional
resources, and to enhance class presentations.

Demonstrate
the ability to work cooperatively with others including the instructor,
peers, field experience site personnel and students, etc. in a variety
of setting including class work groups.
- Assume
responsibility for meeting course appropriate School of Education Professional
Teaching Dispositions including: class and group meeting attendance,
preparation and organization of assignments for class and group projects,
respect for others from diverse backgrounds, facilitation of cooperation
in class and group work, appropriate written and verbal communications,
and the acceptance of constructive feedback.
