Message from the Dean

Welcome to the School of Education web pages!  We are glad that you have chosen to peruse this “doorway to Teacher Education” at Indiana University Northwest. Whether you are just at the stage of trying to choose a program at which to begin your preparation as a teacher, or you are a student who is about to begin your student teaching semester, you will find a great deal of information about us at this site that will be very helpful to you.  For example:

  • If you are new to the School of Education at IU Northwest, you will want to know what our admissions requirements are, what degrees and programs we offer, and how our Office of Student Services can be of help to you.
  • Whether you are a new student or a student who has been in our program for several semesters, you will want to explore the School’s Conceptual Frameworks.  In concise terms, our Conceptual Frameworks are statements of the knowledge and skills we expect students to be able to demonstrate prior to completing either an undergraduate or a graduate program.  These give you a good overview of the kinds of rigorous learning outcomes that we expect of our students in all of our programs.
  • Because you will want to know how to plan your program of study in the most effective and efficient way, advising is always important to students.  You will want to explore the information regarding our advising system.
  • Academic programs are the heart of any professional program because sequences of courses are the means by which the faculty can facilitate the learning of students to ensure they develop the knowledge and skills needed to be successful in their careers.  You will find complete descriptions of each of our preparation programs on this web site so that you can see the kinds of courses and field experiences that are required for each.
  • Faculty are the people who deliver academic programs to students, who mentor students’ development, and who ensure the quality and the effectiveness of the learning experiences that students have within any given program of study.  The faculty of the School of Education at IU Northwest are  outstanding, and if you visit the faculty section of this web site you will be able to “meet” each one.
The teaching profession has never been more important than it is right now.  The teaching profession has never faced more challenges than it faces at the present time, but the teaching profession has never had greater opportunities to really make a difference than it has right now.  It is an exciting time to be involved in our profession, and the School of Education at IU Northwest is an outstanding place for you to begin your involvement.

If you are a current student, we hope that the information provided in this web site is helpful as you progress through your program of study.  If you are trying to decide where you might begin your professional preparation, we hope that the introduction that is provided by our web site will convince you to make IU Northwest your doorway to a career as a professional educator.
