1) IUN fall anthro course information

The North American Indians course is filled in all the crosslisted numbers, it has exceeded the size of the room and no larger room has become available yet.

There is room in the other two upper level anthro courses:

Walking with the Great Apes, a study of the apes as seen thru the work of Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, and others. It is a natural science credit and can be taken at 5:30 MW at either the 200 or 400 lever (the later requires a research paper.)

And at the same time on T-Th we have the history and theory of cultural anthropology course, with a connected one hour ethnographic film section; the course has 3 names and 3 numbers, but the basic number is ANTH E200. Those pursuing the sociology BA with the anthropology/ethnography option probably want to take it as Soc S441 so it counts as the theory requirement for the BA.

Other courses of interest to Sociology/anthro BA students include S230, S250 (both required) and S254 which can fulfill the methods requirement.

REGISTRATION INFO:

I (Bob Mucci) still do not have an office due to the water damage to Lindenwood 231, but I will be relocating to Sycamore 212 in the next few days and will stay there for a month or so. I will be at IUN for registration on Mon, Wed, Thursday August 25, 27, 28 for student advising; look for me in Lindenwood 214. Otherwise you can call me at home or email me for advising, reply to this newsletter or call me at 773-929-0456; during business hours try calling the department first to locate me, 219-980-6607.

2) Welcome back party at Bob Mucci's house in Chicago

I will be hosting a picnic/party/open house on Saturday September 6, 2003, for present and former students, faculty, and staff of the IUN department of Sociology and Anthropology. Families are most welcome, no pets please. Requests were split for an afternoon picnic or an evening party, so given the small size of my house and back yard, I decided to have an extended open house gathering that covers both time periods. I'll be cooking corn, chicken, and sausages starting around 2 pm and going late into the night. Guests can bring side dishes, snacks, drinks; BYOB only if you are 21 and have a designated driver. The address is 935 west Altgeld Street, Chicago 60614; it is less than two blocks NW of the corner of Fullerton, Halsted, and Lincoln (where the Biograph Theater is) and one mile west of Lincoln Park Zoo. From Indiana, take I-90 or I-94 into Chicago, go 3 miles past downtown and the Sears Tower, and exit Fullerton Ave eastbound; go a couple of miles and you will come to Sheffield Ave, a traffic light with the el tracks and station visible only a 100 feet ahead -- turn left at that light (before you go under the tracks), go a block north along Sheffield, and turn right at the stop sign - which is Altgeld. It is just after you go under the tracks on Altgeld, a row house with a red brick front porch. Residential parking goes into effect at 6 pm on some local streets, but I have a stack of one evening temporary stickers; do NOT park in the lot across the street, they tow nightly. Best bet for on street parking is a block or two to the north and west. For a detailed map, type in the address in Mapquest.com or MSN or any web map service. My phone is 773-929-0456. This should be a great opportunity to see those who we haven't seen in years as well as those who we haven't seen all summer.

3) Anthro tutor needed

Any IUN student interesting in tutoring ANTH A105 Human Origins should contact me ASAP.

5) various events

On Friday October 10 and Saturday Oct 11, the Field Museum has a Centennial Tribute to Louis Leakey; the scientific presentations are Saturday from 9 to 4 and include about 20 well known paleoanthropologists (not clear if there are simultaneous talks in different rooms).

Their website is: http://leakeyfoundation.org/

I was so impressed with the list of speakers that I am including it here at the end. The deal is this: teachers and students get in on Saturday for $35 to hear the talks. Supporters pay an extra $200 (two hundred) and they get events on Friday too: tours of the museum, a round table discussion with scientists, and at 6:30 p.m:

    * Centennial Weekend Feature Presentation

      "Discovering Our Earliest Ancestors"

      Meave and Louise Leakey

and at 8 p.m.

    * Chairmen's Reception

Join The Field Museum Founders' Council and the Leakey Foundation Fellows for a private reception with the Leakeys and other scientists in historic Stanley Field Hall. Hosted by Gordon Getty and Marshall Field.

(It looks like for $250 you don't even get dinner on Friday)

But if you want dinner with the Leakeys, that is available too, on Saturday at prices ranging from $350 up to a $25,000 table:

Cocktail Reception, Dinner and Presentation

The Casino. 195 East Delaware Place

Featuring Richard Leakey, Paleoanthropologist, Conservationist and Statesman.

Honoring Jean M. Auel, Author of The Clan of the Cave Bear and the Earth's Children series

Gilbert M. Grosvenor, Chairman of the Board, National Geographic Society

This is out of my price range, but I hope lots of people can afford these events so the work can go on. I'll be paying the $35 for the Saturday talks only, and I hope to see many of you there; here is the list of speakers on Sat:

Juan-Luis Arsuaga, Paleoanthropologist, Spain

Bob Martin, Comparative Primatologist, USA

Berhane Asfaw, Paleoanthropologist, Ethiopia

        Indiana Academy of Science

RE: Call for Papers, Deadline is August 29th

Greetings, Anthropologists of Indiana,

The Indiana Academy of Science is preparing for our Fall annual

meeting, to be held on Friday, October 17 at Anderson University,

Anderson, Indiana. All interested parties are encouraged to submit

abstracts for presentations by Friday, August 29.

Since 1885, the IAS has promoted scientific research and the diffusion

of knowledge within Indiana; the Anthropology Section of the IAS is a

great place for anthropologists from all subdisciplines to present the

results of their research to an interested audience that is excited to

hear about findings from Indiana, other states, and other nations. Along

with academic and professional researchers, students, both graduate and

undergraduate, are strongly encouraged to participate in the meetings.

The dues for IAS membership currently stand at $30 for a regular

member and $10 for a student member. You do not have to be an IAS member

to submit your abstract, and may pay your dues at the meeting if

necessary. Use the following web-links to submit your abstract, join the IAS, or

otherwise register your interest.

7) IUN anthro club

no one from the club has contacted me yet about when the first meeting will be (other than a request from Angelina to "tape me up" at the Welcome Back Days on campus); we have a speaker to reschedule from last fall, a new faculty member to meet, and several students have to tell us about their dig experiences over the summer.
