DEGREE: Associate of Science in Health Information Technology

ACADEMIC FEATURES:

A career in health information technology combines the disciplines of medicine, information management, and computer technology within the health care industry. 

The registered health information technician (R.H.I.T.) performs a variety of technical health information functions, including the following: analyzing and technically evaluating health information for accuracy; compiling administrative and health statistics; coding diagnoses as well as procedures for reimbursement and databases; and creating disease registries for researchers.

To become certified, students in the health information technology program must successfully complete IU Northwest degree requirements for an associate of science in health information technology and pass the certification examination administered by the national professional association, the American Health Information Management Association.

CAREER OPTIONS:

Registered health information technicians are employed by hospitals, ambulatory and long-term care facilities, home health agencies, clinics, and physicians' offices. Job opportunities range from positions for health record analysts and coders to careers as quality management and utilization management coordinators and supervisors of health information functions.

PROGRAM ADMISSION PROCESS

  1. Apply and be admitted to Indiana University Northwest.
  2.  After being admitted to the University, apply for the Health Information Technology Program by obtaining an application from the Office of Admission or the School of Allied Health Sciences.
  3.  Submit an Allied Health Application by APRIL 1.
Admission to the program is based upon the applicant's high school and/or previous college course work and a personal interview. A 2.0 minimum G.P.A. for person's college credit is required.
